Well, I see your point, I should have been clearer, I didn't mean to imply that circumcision was the only treatment for phimosis. I know there are a few different methods that can yield positive results, sometimes circumcision is the best course of action though, but obviously not always.

If we go by your suggested "relative severity" or "suffering it causes" I think FGM still comes out "worse". Take a look here: http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs241/en/

Yes, but what's practiced predominantly? I'm not sure what you're getting at here. I'm not deciding anything, I'm offering an opinion. My opinion is that since the "standard" form of circumcision is what's practiced predominantly it's hard to equate circumcision with FGM as it doesn't have such a dominant "model". It varies a lot more from area to area. I'm not saying FGM is always worse than circumcision, but it usually is. Both are bad, it doesn't need to be a competition.

I said that they can't be equated because there are varying degrees of FGM whereas the predominant form of circumcision is the removal of the foreskin only. Try reading something once in awhile. You don't know anything about me, so thanks for making that excellent point about my reading habits.

ha.. Using 4chan to back up your point does more damage to your arguments than anything else you've said. Also, your reasoning (seeing as you think 4chan makes a valid point) is the same that people use against same sex marriage: Gay people marrying? People will be marrying animals next! One does not lead to the other I think its just a modern view to blame your missing foreskin for all the problems in your life. I have a foreskin, so... what? Great, dont do it to your kids, but don't infringe o…

it is a cultural and religious practice I think this is the issue. Cultural and religious practices shouldn't be immune from criticism. It's not torture in my opinion, arguing that it is is a stretch at best, however it is an unnecessary medical procedure that takes personal consent away from the individual. That's the issue I have with it. A free society gives the individual as much autonomy as possible. If you're a Christian you can choose not to follow this worldview when you get older, you c…

"The terms genital modification and genital mutilation can refer to permanent or temporary changes to human sex organs." Wiki It can't really be equated with FGM as that tends to be much much worse. But it strips a child of their bodily autonomy. There's no real way to justify circumcision unless it's medically necessary (like with phimosis). The only arguments you'll hear are aesthetic or tenuous health claims that lose all credence if proper hygiene is used.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
