Yep. As a philosopher once said, "either you have a plan, or you're a part of someone else's plan."

Friendliness. Only threats are met with hostility. If you perceive yourself at the top, no one is a problem.

Agreed. The exaggerated writing and aggressive undertones spices it up. Intelligent readers should appreciate the hyperbole. Relationship advice columns are boring otherwise.

Exactly. It's almost a microcosm of history.

I missed it. What is the original thread? Thanks.

That whole "nurturing and empathetic" shit flies right out the window, carried out on the wings of yelling, insults, and crying. How precious...

They're trying to convince themselves they love their lives by hopefully convincing others.

Speaking of the self-adoration, I would like to see sociological research done on the correlation between female polyamory and traits of narcissism. I imagine it's a damn strong one.

"And he hits me again and again. From somewhere deep inside, I want to beg him to stop. But I don’t. I don’t want to give him the satisfaction. He continues the unrelenting rhythm. I cry out six more times. Eighteen slaps in total. My body is singing, singing from his merciless assault..."

“Oh, fuck the paperwork,” he growls. He lunges at me, pushing me against the wall of the elevator. Before I know it, he’s got both of my hands in one of his in a vice-like grip above my head, and he’s pinning me to the wall using his hips. Holy shit. His other hand grabs my ponytail and yanks down, bringing my face up... -- E.L. James, Fifty Shades of Grey

Great post. Nice combo of ideas not typically seen here, yet definitely related.

Most of this has already been elaborated. It's known as rank theory in psychology.

Yep. The basement allows the aromas to waft upwards and marinate your living room with that lovely dead hooker smell.

Which SSRI? And did it interrupt your libido at all? Have heard bad things.

Precisely. And a first mate with bad nerves at the first sign of distress is like a drowning man; they'll pull you under just to keep themselves afloat. Mend the ship alone, then re-crew.

As a lucid example of this, consider the situation of my grandmother and grandfather. My grandfather had been selling cocaine in the 80's and doing quite well for himself financially. He took my grandmother to Vegas, the whole nine yards. Fast forward some bad decisions, and he got arrested and thrown in prison for a few years. Think she remained behind and waited patiently on that "boat" he built for them? Nope. Not only did she abandon ship, but she ended up in a relationship with the very she…

Thanks for taking the time to share an insightful and well-written response. I agree with all the points you made. Coming to terms with a lot of these new ideas (quite "ancient" in their biological validity, ironically) isn't easy by any means. It takes time, patience, self-reflection, and so on. Unfortunately, many of us have had to learn the hard way. In this sense, I think it's actually an act of compassion to try and educate others.

That's a great point. My only objection is this: the "reality tunnels" that we inhabit and see the world through make other perspectives almost invisible. A fish doesn't know it's in water. Similarly, unless there is some friction or disturbance in your self-deprecating worldview, it can go on unimpeded - even at the detriment of your own quality of life. Actions speak louder than words, surely, but to get people to pay attention to certain actions you may have to use some words.

We're definitely missing most of the 'initiation rite' elements in our modern, Western culture. And it's altogether absent in a single-mother household. Joseph Campbell wrote a lot about the value of rites of passage into manhood.

I agree. The best tactic would - ideally - be one of a subtle approach, and only given when asked. But said friend repeatedly brings up his relationship issues (or lack thereof) to me in person. Polite passivity only flies for so long. I don't believe it was my intentions or communication style that elicited his angst, but the sheer cognitive dissonance. I just told him to try some "reading" on the issue. Seemed like a small enough pill.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
