They think it's like the movies where it's attacking and countering and throwing 10 hay makers into each other. Or they think that there's no way someone would ACTUALLY assault them. Truth is violence is more often extremely fast, as in being thrown off a fucking ledge or being stabbed 5 times in 2 seconds.
