Alas, the despair of the perpetually over-verbose! I too tend to suffer from this. I think the problem that keeps being brought up again and again - and which I (badly) tried to discuss above (and then apologised for) - is that SRSters are trying 'again and again' to convince people, and failing so frequently that they give up entirely and resort to pure trolling. My feeling is that yes, the success rate of debate on the internet is ridiculously low and unrewarding. But, there's a large number o…

As far as I've seen, the only way in which it's practically a safe space is that politeness and a willingness to listen to the opposition (instead of absolutely sticking to your ways and merely evangelising). Which is less of a 'safe space' and more of a... debate space. But if you've had civil, humble queries crushed for mere dissent then I guess you got unlucky. I certainly have never found it to be that way, and I frequent it daily.

Wasn't me who clarified, and probably would've taken less effort to edit that than to reply to the above, but whatever. Upvotes for a misleading, flawed anti-SRS post ahoy, I guess. I don't really get your disagreeing, I suppose. Since I've had plenty of healthy debates with them. Yes, you have to be coming from a position where you're actually willing to listen, but then that's what debates should be - not just two sides with earplugs on yelling at each other. Be civil, be willing to listen, ac…

Maybe if you accept the point you should edit your comment (with a full disclosure about what it used to say if you want), because at the moment it continues to be vastly misleading. I also disagree that they're all that banhappy. What they generally ban is those who are not willing to actually debate - to listen to the other side and actually argue it, instead of smearing it, ignoring or dismissing the points and just blaring out their own views as if debate isn't give-and-take. I for one have …

Not at all. I had hoped I'd been clearer on this. The comment culture is what I don't agree with - an 'any deviation from our norm is insta-banned' policy that only makes the anti-bigot brigade look like the bad guys. I don't participate, and wouldn't particularly mind people doing that even if I didn't ethically agree with it, but it ends up making me and the rest of the anti-bigots look bad. So... it's not just the isolate SRS pretends it is. Also, if SRSD is a better subreddit and you only do…

To pretend SRS is a bubble that no-one sees other than the 'sane few' and that anyone bothered by it is going out of their way to do so is ridiculous. I am subscribed to SRS because they call out some of the most shocking and outrageous crap reddit spews out. To pretend that discrediting your own cause through juvenile bullying (regardless of who and who doesn't deserve it - most do, some don't) is the only coping mechanism to the shit reddit craps out is patently ridiculous. As I said above, ge…

Their methods are "wool over their own ears" style trolling and hate-bandwagoning. It's ridiculous, since as you say they're frequently espousing very reasonable positions, yet they act like juvenile arsewipes and turn even more people against them. When confronted with it, they always just say "Oh, it's our coping mechanism for how much crap there is on reddit". Here's a coping mechanism - stand up and make yourself a coffee, or some cheese and crackers. Go outside for a bit. Come back and resp…

Even so, if you responded to each rebuttal pointing out which ones were just nonsense (and crucially why they were), that'd be the same effort. Making a vacuous 12 word statement poo-pooing without explanation is far lazier. Besides, you say all the paragraphs boiled down to the same point, but you didn't even make the effort to refute that one point (still less effort than the responses above). Not to mention many of the complaints were valid "Where's your sources? Is this just anecdotal ill-wi…

Really? There's countries where clitoral mutilation is encouraged and certainly there are no protections available to baby girls from the parents who wish to subject them to this. Granted it is certainly less common, but to deny it outright is a bit silly.

Really? There's frequently a paragraph-per-point, and you come up with one strawman in 12 words and consider the effort equal? Weird.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
