As far as I've seen, the only way in which it's practically a safe space is that politeness and a willingness to listen to the opposition (instead of absolutely sticking to your ways and merely evangelising). Which is less of a 'safe space' and more of a... debate space. But if you've had civil, humble queries crushed for mere dissent then I guess you got unlucky.
