i agree that he shouldn't have hung back all the time but as far as always having your SO's back regardless of the situation is wrong. if my SO is out of line or flat out wrong, i will tell her what i think and try to reach some sort of common ground.

as a bystander, i wouldn't risk getting stabbed or knocked out over this. civic responsibility shouldn't apply here because it entails aggressive physical contact in a low-stakes situation. the thief just wants to leave -- no one is in immediate danger and the company will be fine.

of course, there are examples throughout history. i'm sure if i fought Amada Nunes, she would bodybag me. but females like her are an absolute exception to the "normal guy"; as is Anderson Silva in his prime, to the rest of us. and for the whole "flabby guys in their mid-30s and have never been in a single fight", don't underestimate them either. i would wager that this guy would completely beat the shit out of an unathletic, uncoordinated, experienced male or your "average" female.
