Oh the shit I get from calling a woman "ma'am"! Mostly Yankees or educated young west coasters. "I'm not that old!l" or just blank uncomprehending stares. If they get really bitchy I launch into my story of being raised southern and it's just a habit/manner/colloquialism that I don't feel like fighting. I tell em if it makes em feel better I say ma'am to the girl in the drive through window. It has nothing to do with the respect level you think I owe you. And yes, you are old.

Yep. Never full on confront women in positions with more power than you in the workplace (And that's all of them no matter where they are in the org chart). They have overwhelming resources and "firepower", with the protection of the system and the state. You'll die charging that hill and you won't get two feet up it. There are other ways of attack that might get labeled as passive aggressive. But I don't think the Cong or the North Vietnamese cared about the criticism of their tactics.
