Be cautious of uni. Don't take a full 4-year program unless it's required by a specific professional association, needed for immigration/visa purposes, used to satisfy a rule for some corporation, you're unusually competent and motivated in the subject, or you're going to an ivy league on a full-ride. I've been on both ends of the hiring process in Canada. Are you applying to remote jobs nation-wide? Are you using Indeed? Software jobs should be relatively plentiful and shouldn't be high-stress like the one you mentioned. There's definitely a problem with your resume. Look through specific job postings and make sure you have all the keywords in there. People with limited knowledge of computers are filtering the resumes and they rely on the names of programming languages and toolsets heavily. …

Same, I love my job so much! After I left uni and got my first computer job it was like "aahhhhhhh". Thank gosh for remote work.

Fiction and non-fiction are both worthwhile. I think your experience may be due to the fact that you were genuinely interested in fiction where the science stuff was forced upon you. Really, it's all about following your passions.
