It also has to do with the story she tells herself and her friends. She's constructing it all along. "I did everything for him. I even bought the groceries and made sure he had toilet paper. He never appreciated me." Just looking for the sympathy "You go girl. You deserve better than that."

This question is what's known as a double bind. The only way out is not to play. That's why the standard advice is: Never give a direct answer to a question, unless the answer is "No". I think the opposite. The response was a textbook agree and amplify. Any kind of "I am following my dream" or "actually,..." would have come off as qualifying himself. Followup should have been something like "I'm going to have to rethink whether it's ok to take you out in public." Re-assert her plate status and show that you disapprove of her behavior.

Need more details: What's hard about it? Are they flaking on you? Resisting your advances? Not answering your calls? What are you doing differently the second time? Maybe you are at a club and drunk the first time and then you think it will be a good idea to go on a date? That would explain it.
