Roughly speaking, right now women have cherrypicked the best bonuses from both the traditional and the modern gender roles, while refusing to accept the responsibilities of either. So for example, in a divorce, women almost always get the children and possibly half the man's stuff, because that's what the traditional gender roles say. Even though that's not what the modern gender roles say, which state that men and women are equal, implying that women shouldn't by default get the kids. (Research…

A problem is that many of them genuinely do believe (a milder form of) that, as I described elsewhere in this thread. It's not venting if they really believe that (or at least, believe a slightly milder form of it). Also, if people in this subreddit vent in a similar way about women ("men have all these positive traits that women don't" or some such), then we have people coming into this subreddit to tell us that we're not allowed to say things like that, not even in a venting way. We might even…

This is an especially blatant example, but milder forms of this are very common. The average person on the street will tell you that women are more emotionally intelligent than men and have more common sense and are more compassionate etc. But then they're unwilling to name any thing that men are better at than women, expect for physical strength / speed. While that's common, honestly I consider that to be a female supremacist position. After all, if a white person said "white people have these …

How to actually make progress with men's rights. It's obvious to any rational person that certain kinds of anti-male discrimination are bad, but then how do you go about actually ending that discrimination in the real world. Because right now, it looks like you either get radical feminists trying to shut you down, or you get people saying "instead of fixing things for men we should improve things for everyone", or you get people saying "yeah I guess you do have a point there", but at the end of …

Yes, bad men exist; and yes, men are physically stronger than women. But that doesn't justify this current blatant anti-male discrimination. You shouldn't discriminate against a huge group just because there are bad apples in it, and those individuals can do a lot of harm. https://www.reuters.com/article/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/combat-soldiers-more-likely-to-commit-violent-crimes-study-idUSBRE92E003/ says that combat soldiers are more likely to commit violent crimes. And clearly they…

Dr. K (a psychiatrist) made the following point: If he tells someone he works with murderers in prison, people tell him he's an amazing man. If he tells someone he works with incels, people have an "ick" reaction and tell him he's awful.

You can always find a couple of people in any group who genuinely are suffering terribly. However, tons of people undergo surgery with the intention of giving themselves a prettier face. Practically no one undergoes surgery to intentionally give themselves an uglier face. Also, if people wanted to make themselves look uglier, well it's pretty easy to intentionally apply makeup in such a way that you look uglier / older. But practically no one does that. Practically no one intentionally photoshop…

There was actually someone saying that sexual inequality today is greater than wealth inequality as measured by the gini coefficient. If we want to stick with the free market metaphor: well pretty much everyone agrees that even in a free market, companies shouldn't get to say "we don't hire black people." So let's also agree to end anti-male discriminiation. That already would help men out a lot, including dating-wise.

You are right, they very well may say that -- but it's nonsense, because if a man tries to kill himself and fails, he probably doesn't tell anyone. While a woman is more likely to tell her friends / psychologist. Hence it's only women's failed attempts that get into the statistics. Men's failed attempts don't get recorded.

Yeah, reddit mods are honestly typically awful people. Unfortunately. After all, well-adjusted people with a rich social life, a family and a good job typically aren't going to volunteer to spend hours each day doing unpaid work to moderate a sub. Hence the people who will become reddit mods often get off on having a modicum of power. The almost best-case scenario of a reddit mod is that they're well-meaning and not power-hungry, but that they're so terminally online that they're out of touch wi…

Yeah. Some attractive guys would argue that most people don't understand their problems. Well, I think attractive people don't understand the problem that unattractive people face. Attractive people can say "on that date, a woman groped me and I really didn't like that" and yes, I do genuinely empathize, that sucks and it's not okay. On the other hand, attractive people probably don't realize how heart-crushing it is to just be rejected by everyone and to be alone.

Whether justified or not, you're never going to convince the majority of people to see things your way. To guys who can't find a hookup or girlfriend, what you say will always sound like "won't people think of us poor millionaires, we have it so tough." So whether justified or not, I'd advise you to look inside and do your own inner work / personal healing, to deal with whatever you're grappling with. No I won't support all men. Women don't support all women. It's not quite the same though. Sure, women may dislike other individual women and not want to help them, but women generally stand up for women's rights. In fact, sometimes excessively so in my opinion (see "discriminate against men during hiring processes" initiatives). Meanwhile, men in general don't care about men's rights, to the detriment of men. I'm not saying men should stop competing against each other, but it'd be nice if all m…

Some of those things you link are more problems with being famous than with being pretty. Yes fame can suck, but it's entirely possible to be attractive without being famous, and overall I still think attractive is an advantage. Even though yes, being attractive does have disadvantages. I've been unattractive at one point in my life and attractive at another, and I much prefer the overall "being attractive" package, even with the occasional woman just wanting to use you for her own satisfaction …

I can see that genuinely sucking. Without irony, you have my sympathy. On the other hands, thanks for sharing a perspective that most people don't ever see. Yeah, I believe it. I've never been at your level of attractiveness, but I have been pretty attractive at one point in my life, and honestly that period dramatically lowered my opinion of the average woman. Good point. But then, this whole feminist assumption of "women = victims" isn't actually based on anything if we're talking about the west in 2024, which also makes THAT a weird assumption in my mind. 80% of suicides are men, and more structural discrimination happens against men. So why are women the victims?

Likely attractive men get abused and manipulated by women at a greater rate than other men. I'm not saying that this is false. But I am saying that until I see a source, I'm not convinced this is true.

I mean, you also could have just googled those words, and then applied some thinking to the meaning of those words and the current context, and you would have arrived at my conclusion too. And like me, you too would be pretty sure that's what OP meant. I'm so sorry. I'm also always so puzzled when feminists make arguments that are obviously horrible if you sex-swap those arguments. That's just such a basic logic test that I'm surprised many feminists don't do that.

In my ideal world, being attractive isn't a huge advantage. But in reality, it is. And you're never going to convince everyone to stop dating pretty people over non-pretty people. After all, what we call attractiveness are indicators of "I have good genes", and people want their children to have good genes so that those children have a smaller chance of dying. You're not going to convince people to stop wanting their children to have good genes, just because that hurts the feelings of the unattr…

Men are owed not being discriminated against. Here's a great way to expose female discrimination: Currently men face harsher crimes than women for the same crime. Which do you support: harsher punishment for women, to make it even lighter punishment for men, to make it even keep it uneven. (And if you answer this with the argument that men commit more crimes, then follow-up question: do you also support harsher punishments for black people than for white people, for the same crime? women (probably people in general but I don't date men) are really bad at dating. Every conversation is like pulling teeth, and they die off after a day or two. I had a period of time where my experience was exactly like you describe. Then I became a much more appealing man. And then suddenly all the women I talked to online put in lots of efforts into the convo, the convo flowed smoothly, and moving to a physical meetup happened early on in the convo (the women were happy to). Yes, I know in feminist circles, incel means woman-hater, because that's really convenient for feminist arguments. Because if they're non-woman-hating, non-vitriolic men who are deeply suffering, then you sort of need to help incels. But if they're woman-haters, screw them. But the thing is, you don't get to decide what the colloquial use is. Because there are plenty of people who use incel for an INvoluntary CELibate, whom isn't necessarily a woman-hater. The ones who aren't vocal about it, you're not realizing that they're MGTOWs. But other than this, this is often the problem -- men are in pain (80% of suicides are men), and most people talk about "it's their own fault" or "how can we get men to shut up and resume being the workhorse of society, in a manner that doesn't annoy or inconvenience me?"

Dr Ruth might have amazing other qualities, I don't know her. I'd phrase it as: for most women the man being left-wing is a plus but not a strict requirement. So you're right, some women who say they want a left-wing man end up with a right-wing man. But, this is one more factor that makes dating harder for men and women, and that can lead to some women having standards so high that she's not going to find anyone.

Because most people have an attitude of: "the workhorse isn't working? That's not okay. Let's see how we can get the workhorse to work again." Men people don't actually want to spend a significant amount of time and energy on helping men. At most they're only willing to expend the effort of telling men "hey, just improve and get a girlfriend, you're welcome, good luck", or they want to tell men some variation of "here's what you need to do to benefit this other group."

Lots of 6/10 women use Tinder to hook up with 9/10 chads. Then those 6/10 women refuse to "settle" for anything less than say an 8/10. The 6/10 woman likely won't get commitment from an 8/10 so she's pissed, and the 6/10 men are pissed because the 6/10 women are rejecting them. A 6/10 men probably could date a 4/10 woman but often refuses to -- which pisses those 4/10 women off because they want a 6/10 man. 2) On tinder 5% of men get matches. No one cares about MGTOW or whether you have sex. People do. There's plenty of men and women openly saying that MGTOW is a bad thing. It’s the hatred and disdain for women that characterizes an “ incel”. First of all: men are so lonely that 80% of suicides are men, and we're on a men's rights sub, so let's talk about how women are victims and let's talk about what men need to change to benefit women. I think that what you say is what the term "left" means now. Just because men and women have the same IQ and have equal worth, doesn't mean that women's and men's brains are the same. They're not. Girls really do like playing with dolls more often and boys really do like playing with cars more often. That's not just cultural. And this also means that adult men and women make different choices even without cultural influence. Women really do have slightly different scores on average in the big 5 personality.

I think it has become pointless to use terms like "patriarchy" and "feminism" because they mean completely different things when different people use them. Instead of saying those words, people should just type out specifically what they actually mean -- and be honest, don't do a bait and switch of saying "us women want for equality" but then push for female supremacism.

Good points. And what you have going on now is that already more women attend university while there are more women-only university scholarships. I think intuition exists and that listening to your intuition is a good thing. However, men also have intuition, and more importantly, in most (not all) cases people are confusing their emotions with their intuition. And people's emotions can point them in wildly inaccurate directions. A lot of people who claim to be following their intuition are actually following their emotions.

Then you hit them with the Black men have higher rates of recidivism despite lower risk factors: study https://phys.org/news/2018-10-black-men-higher-recidivism-factors.html And you point out that by their own logic, black men should receive harsher sentences for the same crimes, which is of course a position that no one wants to defend.

Fun question to ask feminists: Women currently receiving lighter punishments for the same crime than men do. Which do you support: reduce punishment of men, to make it even increase punishment of women, to make it even keep it uneven

Other times I want to press a big red button and delete every het man in existence. If I said "other times I want to press a big red button and delete every black person in existence", would you consider that to be an acceptable statement? It's instructive to replace statements you make about men with equivalent statements about black people, and then see if you sound horribly racist. I get that you might have been hurt, but then the solution is to look inwards and work on your own pain. I've be…

The mistake that you and u/Valuable-Owl-9896 are making is thinking that men have a button that they can press and then, hey presto, they're happy without female companionship. The reality is that humans are a social species, and we have no such button. You also wouldn't expect an animal belonging to a pack animal species to be happy if you isolated it. Sure, maybe you're a guy who happens to be wired that you can be genuinely happy without a partner. But not everyone is wired that way. And tell…

You're trying to fight a symptom, not the disease. The disease is that women growing up with social media and internet dating are impossibly picky, plus there's widespread anti-male discrimination and bias. Those are the things that actually need to be addressed.

So, do you suggest lobotomies, or do you suggest gay conversation therapy style camps? You know, if you wanted to actually help men, how about demonstrating against anti-male discrimination instead of telling us plebes that our sexual desire should be controlled or removed.

Cool. Due to female lobbying, it's not even legal anymore to have men's only clubs. So women are telling us men to support each other, while other women have successfully lobbied to make that illegal. Thanks, women.

What studies say rely on what women themselves say. I don't think female self-reported happiness is very reliable because: lots of women are emotionally / ideologically invested into the idea that single women are happy. Therefore they'll look through the world with that lens. Even if they're not intentionally lying (and some are), they'll view their life with a view of "I'm single, I have a good job, therefore I must be happy." Generally speaking, being a young single childless woman is fun, an…

It's easy to say "extreme case" but I think that either the girlfriend dumping the man, or just the woman significantly reducing sex frequency from then on out because she's lost attraction, happens more often than most people think. It's just that people don't like talking about it. In general both men and women feel that people should spread messages that encourage people to date and find a partner. And this very much isn't one of them. Also, I'm sure that in some cases the woman engages in me…

If I had a daughter, I would tell her that men have it hard and that she should support good men, even if they cry, even if that's not super hot in the moment. Similar to how women seem to think it's fine to tell men / their sons not to swap out aging wives for younger models, and indeed tell men to stay faithful to wives even as they age. Of course, being a white man, I'm not going to even bother to try and tell women what they should do, because they're not going to listen to me.

Had a girlfriend, cried, then didn't have a girlfriend. Got another girlfriend, cried, again didn't have a girlfriend. I'm single today. I don't know, seeing as how procreation is evolutionarily advantageous, and I need a woman for that, it sure seems like crying is evolutionarily disadvantageous (that's still true even though only a portion of women dump crying men).

Back when women weren't allowed to vote and were asking for that right, would you have welcomed men telling feminists "what you should REALLY do is make sure that you women support each other emotionally"? Probably a part of you would have been like "screw you, stop discriminating against me first." Even though in theory it's not a bad thing for women to support each other.

If you think that average men are privileged, or that top-tier men are rigging the system to benefit men, then I think you're just completely wrong, and that you should spend some time off the internet interacting with the real world. If you mean patriarchy in the sense of "the 99% is getting screwed over by the 1%, with men and women being screwed over equally, and the 1% being mostly male" then I agree. But I don't think it's helpful to frame that in terms of patriarchy, even if that might be …
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates27/06/24 09:54 PM

Yeah. I'm sure that it's evolutionarily advantageous for women to not be attracted to crying men, but then again men are never allowed to get away with the argument of "well this is biologically advantageous for me, so I should get to do it." As a man it would be advantageous to dump an aging wife for a younger model, but that's also not socially acceptable for men to do. I think women can overcome their instinctive biological programs just fine, just as men do.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates27/06/24 09:50 PM

It's both. For women it's advantageous to have culture nudge men into being men they're attracted to. And for men it's advantageous to get nudged into a direction that allows them to be in a relationship with a woman.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates27/06/24 09:48 PM

One of the reason for that is that men are much more willing to emotionally comfort a crying woman, than women are willing to emotionally comfort a crying man. Personally, I've twice cried in front of a girlfriend, and twice I've been dumped soon after. In turn, that and similar experiences lead men to basically freeze up emotionally, which isn't good for them or their friendships / social network.

The problem is, just like the word feminism, is that it means two completely different things at the same time. You can have the opinion that it only has one meaning, but not everyone agrees with you, and you're never going to convince everyone to adopt your way of thinking. There absolutely are people out there who, for example, use the word "incel" as an insult in the "I bet you can't even have sex, loser" meaning.

They might get [sex] from below average women. Below average women can easily sleep with average guys (actually average 5/10 guys, not the type of 7/10 guy that some women label as average). So if a below average woman can sleep with an average guy, why would she sleep with a below average guy? Indeed, if you go to incel hangout places, there's tons of below-average guys who are absolutely desperate to just have sex with anyone -- and if they could find a below-average woman to sleep with, they …

I'm not saying that all the responsibility is on women to change. But if women change nothing about their current position, then men's rights aren't going to improve, and are probably going to keep getting worse. That's just the reality. Moreover, when women were demonstrating for their rights, they also had help from some men. When black people were demonstrating, they also had help from some white people. Without that, the civil rights movement probably wouldn't have succeeded.

Not the whole, but part of the solution is that women do need to do better. If women didn't tolerate anti-male stereotyping or discrimination (you know, like women don't tolerate anti-black people stereotyping and discrimination) things would chance for the better. So long as most women don't care, and a small group of women actively fight against men's rights, things aren't going to change for the better, realistically speaking.

Hah, I can see that. In a similar vein: getting more self-respect has made me more disagreeable with women, because now I don't tolerate them blatantly negatively stereotyping men in ways that wouldn't be considered acceptable if they did it about any other group. I've twice cried in front of a girlfriend, and twice been dumped soon after. And I know stories like mine are relatively common. At which point are we going to "teach women to stop dumping their partners for crying"? And yeah, I know not all women do that, but we're also "teaching men to do X and not do Y" even when already lots of men do / don't do that.

The fact is that men's rights activism is a tiny movement, and it's even smaller on the left. So if you want to accomplish anything ever, you probably shouldn't say that all conservative men's rights activists have a "perverted version" of it. Because then you split your already tiny movement. Sure, there's absolutely awful people on the right, but not everyone on the right is automatically awful. Let's actually talk to people and listen to them, and only then decide if they're awful or not.

I'm down with transmen being our brothers, so long as they don't turn the movement into a primarily-trans-rights movement. I'm after actual equality, which also means equality for trans people. That being said, I don't love the amab / "assigned men at birth" language, because it suggests that someone just happened to decide to assign "male" to a little baby with a penis. No, the little baby IS male because he's born with a penis. He's not assigned male, he's born male / born as a man. And sure, …

It's also: 80% of suicides are men. So men are absolutely suffering. But mainstream culture is hyper-fixated on women's issues (which yeah, are real) but aren't focused on men's issues at all. For example, if a man cries and a woman leaves him over that, that's a heartbroken man. Or if the woman gets the kids and half his stuff in divorce, that's a heartbroken man. But usually these types of suffering are just handwaved away.

If someone was advocating for female supremacy and not just making an observation, I'd rhetorically punch back with: Black people are overrepresented in crime. Does that also imply that we should give black people harsher punishment for the same crime than white people get? You don't think so? Okay, then why are women given lighter punishment for the same crime than men do, which they statistically are? Same logic. Do you support increasing punishment of women for crimes so that their sentence e…

Sorry to hear that, man. And yes, agree. You can also go to the argument of: if women say they fear men, then apparently that's legit it and somehow it's up to men to be ashamed because some men are bad. if people say they fear black people, then that's racist and xenophobic and shut up.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates08/05/24 08:14 PM

Yeah. Or point out that historically, you had to agree to the draft to be given the right to vote. So women can either agree to be drafted + have the right to vote, or not be drafted + not vote. Which is still a better situation than men are in, who are forced to be drafted + have the right to vote. Men don't even have the choice.

Yeah, well put. The issue is that women don't value women / femininity enough. Therefore they feel they have to put men down, out-compete men in masculine fields, constantly talk thrash about men, etc. If women genuinely saw a stay-at-home mom as being equally valuable as a successful businessman (which I think she is), women wouldn't act so crazy.

Yeah, well said. It's weird that many (not all) women just seem to play manipulative word games to get an advantage. Lots of things are toxic masculinity, but nothing is toxic femininity. Lots of things are misogyny, but nothing is misandry. If women need something, men need to help them; but if men need something, women don't need to help them. And next sentence the woman will claim to be in favor of equality and of women being just as capable as men. It's almost like a female supremacist movem…

Partly it is a misnomer. The term sort of suggests "masculinity is toxic", no matter how often feminists will tell you that's not the definition. But that's still sort of what the term implies. (And of course, if the definition really is about very specific behaviors, why are women so opposed to talking about toxic femininity?) Also, it's yet another wildly broad concept, leading to miscommunications and to people pushing an unreasonable version of the concept but then hiding behind a reasonable…

This whole "your suffering isn't valid because someone else's suffering is worse" is extremely toxic. I'm also sure that you wouldn't tolerate that argument in any situation, except in the case where a woman uses it to invalidate the suffering of a man. Rather than pointing fingers at others and yelling at others, please look inside at your own pain. That's more productive. I don't like Trump, and I don't like comparing refugees to a bowl of poisoned skittled, but Trump isn't fascist. The world was actually relatively peaceful under Trump. Not that a woman grabbed my ass. So maybe I'd be definitionally right to say "I was attacked", but when communicating I still try to use language that evokes an accurate picture in the mind of the listener. I have had moments in time where I thought "no one cares about me, there is no help for me available, I have no inherent worth." And with that mindset, there have been times where I behaved recklessly and did things that exposed me to unnecessarily high levels of risk. What would help is structuring society so that men aren't seen as disposable-unless-they-practically-achieve-something.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates04/05/24 10:35 PM

Yeah, great point. I'm not saying I agree, but lots of men feel that psychologists are something for women and not something that is helpful for a man. Some women hate me, including some non-upper-class women. And sure, maybe feminism wasn't invented by non-upper-class women. But the person that I'm interacting with, the person that I physically have in front of me, is a woman and not some banker. I get that fighting women isn't the solution, but men being annoyed at women is still understandable.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates04/05/24 10:27 PM

Yeah. And some women also label certain behaviors as kind of hot if a hot man does it, and label that behavior as creepy if an unattractive man does it. There's no actual logic behind it. The term toxic masculinity is more used as a cudgel to hit things with that women emotionally don't like.

/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates04/05/24 09:24 PM
10

Yeah. Either the "bear"-women are genuinely delusional, and that's not great. Or they know that the correct answer is "man" but still say "bear" in order to influence men. And that's also not great. Women are allowed to have emotions / fears, but that doesn't mean that either being delusional, or negatively stereotyping people, is okay. I'm frankly surprised that I don't see more women saying "man, but I also want to communicate that I feel unsafe." Men would have sympathy for THAT.

I'm so late that there's probably no point in me typing out a precise rebuttal, but two points: note that there's a moving of the goalposts here. The actual question was "is a man or a bear more dangerous", not "how do women feel" or "does rape happen more often than it should." If a woman replied "man, but too many women get raped and I feel scared" then I have 100% sympathy for that. Let's say that an average woman in her lifetime is alone with 100 adult men. Usually she doesn't get raped, but the ~20% of women who do get raped still encounters 99 non-rapists and 1 rapist (or maybe 98 non-rapists and 2 rapists). An average woman also encounters probably 0 and maybe 1 or 2 bears. So then the metaphor would be: The man-box contains 100 chocolates. There's a 20% probability that one or two of the 100 chocolates is a piece of shit. There's an 80% probability that there are zero …

Go to any "this subreddit is for this group of people" subreddit and say something negative about that group. I'm pretty sure you'd get heavily downvoted, no matter which group-specific subreddit you went to. In fact, I suspect that often you'd get your post removed / banned, which hasn't happened here. Yeah, so funny to negatively stereotype a group of people. I imagine that if I negatively stereotyped any group of people other than men, you would immediately call me a bigot. I think the question fundamentally is about: do you think that, let's say, 20% or more of men are rapists or murderers? Because if that's what someone thinks, then I can understand them answering that they'd rather encounter a bear. But if that's not what someone thinks, then the obvious answer is that a man is less dangerous. What is the definition of a woman being "attacked" by a man? Source for those statistics? Also, women encounter like 100,000 men in their lives and like 0-2 bears. And yes obviously 100,000 men are more dangerous than 0 and sometimes 1 or 2 bears. But that wasn't the man vs bear question -- the man vs bear question is "is ONE man or ONE bear more dangerous."
