I think if someone is writing a book about a subject they should have a background in that subject. Being a tour guide is not a credential to medieval sexuality. That doesn’t mean academia is the only venue, but being a tour guide is not a credential. For example, no issue reading about socialism from someone who has been a union organizer for 30 years.
