I think it depends on how knowledgeable you are about the companies/financial asset you are investing in. If you don't understand anything about them then yes it's pure gambling, but if you have knowledge that makes you see a logical reason for growth, reasons why that asset or company will out compete it's peers, then it is a calculated risk you are taking.
