A few lessons that may or may not be relevant to your situation: Make sure your apartment is close to a good gym and subway hubs and has a short commute to work. Don't join a gym that's too cheap, you'll never get access to squat racks because they're too busy. Best setup I had was literally a gym two doors down, so I didn't have to bundle up for the cold weather, get to the gym, unbundle, work out, rebundle, etc. Instead I just walked there in my gym shorts in 10° weather.
