Have you talked to a lawyer yet? If not, do so as soon as possible (without letting her know about it) to learn what you need to do to protect yourself and what to expect financially and custody-wise. Follow your lawyer’s advice on when and how to initiate the divorce.

You are not alone in this - looming divorce was the most anxiety provoking phase for me. Just thinking about it even now causes anxiety even 15 years later. Short of counseling or medication, you seem to be doing what you can with exercise and deep breathing exercises. I found running longer distances to exhaustion somewhat helpful, but for me anxiety appeared as soon as I tried to sleep and ultimately had to go to medication for several months to get over the worst of it. How certain is the sep…

Not to burst a bubble here but why would she remarry when she can have her fun as a single person and have you pay her alimony? My ex never remarried- best to plan for that too.

Yes. Pension is likely considered a marital asset that would be allocated between them and would be permanent.

Depends on what state you live in as to whether alimony can be permanent or temporary. I’m not aware of any specific formula for years of alimony based years of marriage as every situation is different. Education, years of experience, ability to earn are all factors. In my state even stay at home spouses are generally awarded temporary maintenance if the marriage is less than 15 years. More than 15 years and the odds of permanent maintenance increase. How much depends on which judge you draw.

If you really want to be involved in your kids lives, then you need to live as close to your ex as possible. Yeah, it sucks spending money you don’t want to spend to live near your ex, many of us have been there, but it’s the best money you will ever spend if it keeps you close, both physically and emotionally, to your kids. And with your kids being middle schoolers, being house poor is only temporary as in 5+ years they will be out of high school and you can look at down sizing then. You have p…

I meant to respond directly to OP’s newest post about his WW and new girlfriend, but I must have inadvertently clicked on your comment to respond. I did not mean to suggest anything about your feelings about your ex wife or direct my comment to you as, unlike OP, you weren’t soliciting any advice. Apologies.

Fight the urge to let your exWW taint your emotional life/behavior going forward. I met the love of my life after my first marriage failed. When she and I married I wanted a pre-nuptial agreement protecting our individual assets as we both had kids from prior marriages and I got screwed over financially in my divorce. My now wife agreed to the pre-nup knowing that I was scarred from the first go around. We’ve been together 15 years now and long ago fully combined our assets and finances - trusti…

You end it when your wife won’t believe you. If there is no trust there is no marriage. Moreover you describe her display of utter contempt for you. If you stay in this marriage, what kind of relationship are you normalizing for your children? Do you want them to think how your wife feels about and treats you as normal? Do not let them grow up to believe that a dysfunctional marriage is the norm - end it and coparent.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
