I got a consistent $1k to $2k bill each month for 24 months. My cost was driven by some of the same issues. My ex used the courts to twist the thumb screws. She paid her fees with a loan against her 401k. And ... I mean, frankly, she's about as financially sharp as a bowling ball, an idiot with deep pockets. All I can say is be prepared to finance it. I almost had to beg for money. I was a month or two away. Then suddenly, she cooperated right before trial. And everything resolved at the 11th ho…

You're definitely not alone. The first six months were dark for me. I literally felt immortal. Time had stopped with my mind suspended forever in the center of it all. The next two years were less depressing but still not enjoyable. Four years later, life is better than ever. It takes time. Believe in the promise that it gets better. Because it does. One day this will be in the rear view mirror.

Similar situation. My ex is not much of a mom ... by my standards. She does the hollywood invites ("we should do lunch one day") and never follows through. She missed his birthday two years ago. I tried to talk to her. I told her she should really have a more specific thing in mind. She should say, "Let's do lunch on Sunday". And she went ballistic. Since then, I stay out of it. My son and my ex are going to land on SOME relationship. And this relationship is up to them, but outside of my sphere…

Therapy worked after my divorce. But it came and went. I graduated I guess. I didn't want a therapist who just asked me how my week went. I needed structure and stuff. So I landed on schema therapy and that ran its course. You can dial in lots of different things. Meditation worked well and stuck as a habit. So did books like Siddhartha and Til We Have Faces. Yoga helped.

I bought out of alimony. And that's been fantastic. I don't have to deal with her. She's angry, bitter, reckless, and was forged in Mordor. I only have a few regrets. I lost the home. I missed the 2% rates. That's it. That was all her. She took pride in engineering that and said as much. Divorce has been good for me otherwise.

Mediation is easy to derail. Kids would do it. If you've already paid, or are on the hook to pay, yeah, why not show up.

I dunno if this is an American thing. But I feel dating is almost a servitude model here. The guy is on the hook to be price charming, the girl picks the best car. I'm on the app and get a lot of matches. But dates really do feel like a job interview. I've had two +1 year relationships and a handful of 3-6 month relationships. But they all seem to be looking for support. And fresh out of a divorce, that's a fuck no.

Cheat sheet. Write down what you think a judge would do. Write down your absolute worst acceptable offer (the one where you say "No way, I'm taking this to trial"). Aim for something better than both but know how far back you're willing to retreat. Be realistic about this. Know the cost of trial. Weigh this against the value of any holdout items. Likewise, don't be afraid to communicate that a trial will cost a lot. Emphasize that everyone will be worse off. I think there's a human tendency to s…

The DSM defines it. And it's a legit ICD-10 diagnosis (F60.81). Being bitten by a shark for the second time is also a legit ICD-10 diagnosis (W56.41XD). Just throwing that out there. I'd love to know if it's ever been used. Therapy has really devolved into a weapon. Therapists are referees who just want the hour to end for God's sake. And everyone who attended a session of therapy gets a decoder ring and honorary PhD in Name Calling.

If you're looking to hide trips to the Bahamas, withdraw $50 in cash each time you visit the grocery store. CA has the Schedule of Assets and Debts. It's supposed to list everything with statements. And it has penalties: (h) Remedies [... blah blah blah ...] shall include, but not be limited to, an award to the other spouse of 100 percent, or an amount equal to 100 percent, of any asset undisclosed or transferred in breach of the fiduciary duty. I've seen this play out once. The wife emptied an …

Yah. It's attention. Really, you have three types of people. Her. The people who eat this stuff up. And everyone else who doesn't care. The first two are worthless. Don't say a word. Don't acknowledge. Smile broadly. Be nice. Be genuine. It fucks with them big time. Once you get the hang of it, it actually becomes a lot fun.

Limiting fees? No. Sorry. Fees are controlled by the less cooperative spouse. But here's some advice on getting ahead of fees. My funds (everything from stock to 401k) got locked up with the petition. So I put fees on a card. Those filled up from a previous $0 balance to 30k. My credit score dropped from 820 to 650. I made every payment on time. It was just the spike in spending. So. Think about everything FICO: Will funds get locked? Do you have enough available credit or do you need more? Will…
