I’d say take it with a grain of salt. Most people use it for validation or to poke around and see what’s out there— I’m guilty of this myself. I think it’s important to be mindful of that and not take it to heart, which is difficult. You’re putting yourself out there and it can hurt to not feel appreciated or have your efforts reciprocated, but it’s best to remain as impartial as possible.

What do you mean how lucky women have it, dude? There are plenty of lonely women in the world. You need to drop this victim attitude, man, you’re not the only person in the world to feel lonely— man or woman.

Sure, I wouldn’t necessarily open with “Hi,” as that is about as bland as it gets. But it doesn’t have to be a perfectly constructed and articulated zinger either. I would say whatever feels both natural and fun to you, man.

The best advice I was given is to not put too much pressure on yourself in what you say. Not every single message has to have an incredible amount of value, or any value for that matter. Take a look at /r/tinder, for example. Half of the posts their are shitposts and people being over the top, but a lot of them get numbers regardless. They’re being goofy and not putting too much pressure on themselves— they’re just having fun.

Nah, people get really busy sometimes, dude

Playing off of OP’s advice in socializing with people on a regular basis; having a job with some type of customer interaction, or at the very least having a job at a fairly busy location will help. Or I should say it helped me. If you’re like me, it’s virtually impossible to force yourself to socialize— at least it is until you have gotten good at it.

This says more about the quality of the woman voting, dude, not the quality of the man. Plus, I’m going to assume it’s scripted if it was a show you were watching.

Agreed. Mindfulness is absolutely the way to go. Always be mindful and acknowledge your negative emotions, but don’t react to them.

Dude, chill. Not everything has to be a teaching moment, and conversation with women doesn’t need to be that formulaic,

Dude, why are you trying to make this a life lesson? It’s not anonymous sex— the girl is a friend. I’m just not looking to date anyone right now. I’m just looking for something light and fun at this point in my life. It doesn’t mean it’s how I’m going to live out the rest of my days.

Oh, there’s nothing inherently wrong with. I’m just not looking for anything serious right now.

Fair point. I appreciate the insight, man.

Thanks for the reply, man. I guess my biggest concern is that I don’t want her to feel as though she’s being taken advantage of.

My suggestion is to offer to hang out with them, do something you both enjoy, or even invite them to something you enjoy— hiking, trivia night, whatever it maybe. Following that, I’d be as (appropriately) physical as you can, as it gets them comfortable with you and shows interest. Beyond that, I’d say just have, dude! If you’re like me, the more you stress about it, the worse you feel and the more contrived it will feel. So, do your best to just be in the moment!

I’d say start small, and build up from there. By this, I mean to find something that makes you confident. Even if it’s only for a small amount of time, or something silly like getting a high score in a game. After you’ve found what makes you happy/confident, become aware of that feeling. I know that sounds odd, but becoming conscious of what confidence feels like can make a huge difference. The reason for this, is that feeling of confidence becomes a bit of a life line when you’re out of your el…

I’d have to disagree. The best “adult” interactions come from just having fun with it. The more I try to have an interesting and dynamic interaction, the more frustrated and dissatisfied I am. Granted, this has just been my experience.

I’m by no means an expert, but I hardly ever bring up a past relationship or sexual experience unless it’s relevant or they ask. I think it generally comes across as a bit needy and/or desperate otherwise.

I'd say this is definitely a step in the right direction, man. Discussing the philosophy and the Why behind our motivation and actions is far more helpful than throwing together a half-baked 12-step program.

Go hiking and do it in the woods. Or go to a park at night. I've done both, and personally I think it adds to the excitement and the experience.

This was surprisingly well written-- no offense to the author! Most articles posted on this sub are poorly masked click-bait and magic pill techniques, but this article hit the nail on the head for me.

The fact that you approached while her mom was there is pretty ballsy, man.

I meant to follow up on this a couple of days ago. When you say to "follow up" after your approach, do you tend to use your surrounding/observations, or do you have set questions you typically ask?

I know your post is a few days old, but what do you say when approaching then? For me, it's not so much the actual approach that makes me anxious/nervous, I'm just not sure what to say.

What did you say to open up the conversation? I'm alright with the approach, I just can't think of anything to say.

For me, it's not so much the actual approach that makes me nervous, I genuinely have no idea what to say once I'm there in the situation.

Personally, I don't think you can fake optimism. But, even if you're not an incredibly optimistic person, you can still keep a positive attitude as you go about your day. That being said, you can certainly make a conscious effort to become more optimistic. I've found the best way to start is by watching my self-talk. I try to keep my negative thoughts to a minimum, and reinforce positive thoughts as best I can. Also, keeping a gratitude journal of some sort helps. I know that sounds pretty chees…

Have you brought that up specifically? That he never has an explanation and that things used be different between you two? I think any kind of open communication is going to be your best bet here. Other than that, I'm not entirely sure what the community here can offer, as this seems to go a bit deeper than social skills and self-improvement. Edit: That being said, I'm hoping someone with personal/more experience will comment and can help out!

Not currently in a relationship, and I don't have a kid. But, I would just talk to him and be upfront with your feelings.

I think many people here are raising awesome points, but I think the answer can be much more simple. Having people like me and value me does better me. As people said, having social status/value can carry you far in life. They really go hand-in-hand. But, as others have stated, your focus should not be other people. It should be on yourself. When you are at your best, others will take notice. Granted, this is all anecdotal for the most part. But I've seen it hold true for others. Just be sure yo…
