The way some guys handle post high school is very sad. I know if I had it to do over again I'd change a shit ton of things. The thing is, I don't, and I can't, so I movie forward, I pursue my hobbies/interests/career, and spend 1 night a week dedicated to socializing outside of normal friend groups.

I live in Louisiana. Men down here are almost expected to work offshore as a right of passage. That said, the machine shop I work at is very low paid, but is almost completely free of bullshit, and has 5 women to 60 men working. The men all work in the back, so the machinist and male space are not fucked with.

Thank you so much for saying this. This is part of why I moved out of California, and part of why I've since decided to pursue petroleum engineering. It's literally the last of the domestic engineering jobs that pay well. California is overrun with H1B visa engineers that big companies are training and then sending back to India. It's sad really.

To counter the point about engineering, that doesn't ALWAYS need to be taught in college. My father is a professionally licensed engineer in California but he has no degree. That said I'm going back to school for petroleum engineering, because it's the only way anyone will hire me to do what I want to do. I also believe that degrees outside of medical and STEM jobs are basically useless, and we (hopefully) will see a resurgence of apprenticeships and other programs to give people hard skills
