What context would have made childishly "spilling" water on somebody justified? She had the expectation of getting away with misconduct and it was met with retaliation. Regardless of what some people think literally means, the point is there are words with multiple definitions and sometimes those definitions are so different, they're essentially opposites. Another example would be the written word "resign". Even though each word is pronounced the differently, one meaning means "to quit", the other means to "sign up again". Fast can mean moving rapidly, or fixed and unmoving. Or the term toss out, referring to either suggesting something, or discarding something…

I wish somebody would sit these people down and explain the difference between equality of opportunity and equality of outcome. If the results of this study are problematic for you, look into seeing if women have the equal opportunity to the education or work experience required for the job. Don't expect the jobs to hire people just because they're women, not if you actually care about equality.
