Many of those comedies are meant to be slice-of-life shows. They're intentionally meant to portray at least somewhat "realistic" people, albeit in sometimes ridiculous situations. I don't think people set out to emulate fictional characters, but these shows help normalize destructive behaviors. It's more so that women don't want to "date down", even if their graduate degrees are worthless compared to the successful entrepreneur or tradesman she's dating. Even if you personally are fine with "dating up" in terms of education or income, a wife with higher status or income is still likely to feel like she "can do better." The average man does not want the woman to wear the pants in their relationship, and, quite frankly, neither does the average woman.

Just to counter your last point, the US is actually one of the least involved major economies in the world, and becoming even less involved by the minute.
