Part of the problem is that the Judge is likely going by the punishment as written (which isn't tough enough). Fixing it will require legislation.

Have you two considered moving? Maybe he needs to apply to a wider range of employers the next town over or something. Are you sure he's drinking no more than usual? Bitchy as it might be, he has to at least report in for Unemployment and not lose 50% of his pay. I just know in my bones he is really, really down and really, really just not coping well at all. He's totally lost and needs mentorship and a swift kick in the ass. If you're grocery shopping, I'd start with cutting off the booze.

I would for starters, get both of you a full and thorough STD screening. He doesn't need the normal "see a counselor once a week" therapy, he needs the 8 hour a day, 20+ day straight intensive therapy. My wife's friend's husband had to do something like this. It did apparently make a difference. But they were serious and didn't take any BS from him. How old is he now? How long ago was all this? As other have said, these are severe red flags. You're supposed to hear the subtext, and it doesn't hurt to call her out that if she wants you to take her car in, she should just ask. However, your life will be easier if you listen for the message within the message. She just wants you to take care of her so she's phrasing her questions in a way that you will do so. This book: "Practical Female Psychology for the Practical Man " explains this. https://www.amazon.ca/Practical-Female-Psychology-Man-ebook/dp/B00RR6RNO6

I've had the same experience wiht many men as a teen. They sounded sexist at the time, but now in my 30s? They're mostly correct.
