It's not about the item itself, its whether or not it can be a conversation piece. If you have a story behind the item that demonstrates interesting qualities about yourself, you'll be able to push it beyond "Oh, nice ring!" "Thank you, it's not for sale" to "Oh, nice ring" "Thanks, I got it when I was visiting xyz, blahblahblah" etc...

No need to be sorry, if you didn't know, you didn't know. Didn't mean to come off harsh. Used to have the same problem myself. The most important thing I found was to 'learn' to really get into the music. Enjoy it. Get a feel for it. I always try to find what the beat is and go from that. Start with the head boppin' to get a feel for it, even if you are off to the side. Then take clues from what others are doing. I don't usually do too much if I'm not with someone. Less dancing, more talking? I've not seen one piece of advice here that says you can reliably pick up through dancing. Someone let me know if I'm wrong about this.
