Depends on where you live. In the US, a life sentence means you can come up for Parole in 25 years and if you fail that you must wait another 25 years for the next chance. In the US, we also have LWOP, which means the person will never be eligible for parole. I am also certain the years varies state to state here.

The smart choice would be Rand Paul in some regards. His stance on personal liberty would likely gain him votes, as he could make the race about personal liberty vs. government intrusion.
