The speech thing is always wooly but again, i don't believe this law is predominantly about tackling speech. 'Nottinghamshire Police, which has been recording misogyny as a hate crime since 2016, defines misogyny as "incidents against women that are motivated by the attitude of men towards women and includes behaviour targeted at women by men simply because they are women". I came for the lolz, I stayed for the serious and measured discussion. Comparing this legislation to 1984 is a bit hysterical but may be valid, I don't know, having not read the wording. But neither have you, be honest. I don't think the motivation for this legislation is to police hurt feelings or language tbh but that seems to be everyone's kneejerk assumption.

I think you'll find I did respond and it moved onto a less flippant discussion - catch up. I haven't insulted anyone so - Calm down Boomer! My motivations are myriad and my own. If I thought you were even mildly interested I would share them with you but I doubt that you are. Do I feel better now? Well the hangover has eased up a bit and I just had a pasta salad so yes. I was pointing more towards the sci fi books, not aware the link had an embedded podcast link. It IS grating, which is why I recommend it. Because even when the author does her best to prevent the reader from gendering the characters you absolutely cannot help trying to do so when reading. However, when you pin one down, by a reference to a beard etc, you then can't remember that gender later on when it isn't continuously reinforced. It's trippy.

There is an independent article calling for the wording to be changed to gender hate crime, that still acknowledges women are much more likely to be affected by it.
