Clownshoes, it's not an appeal to tradition. I'm correcting you for being wrong. A guitar and bass are not played with the same techniques at all. A baritone guitar would be a guitarist because the instrument is tuned similarly and has a similar function. A bass does not have a similar function, the notes are tuned EADG (like the bottom 4 of a guitar), but the bass only has 4 strings and is in too low of an octave to achieve clarity when playing chords (playing double/triple stops is different).…

A bass guitar, double bass and guitar are all played using different left and right hand techniques (if you know what you are doing at least). The fact that they are played with strings makes as much sense as calling a piano a string instrument because of the strings inside the piano. Bass guitarist would be way more appropriate, and bassist is the correct term.
