I steer clear of potatoes and rice because they're high in starch. Its a lot easier to keep the wait off, it seems like. I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, notably squash and zucchini sauteed with onions, and meat. Usually have three eggs and some bacon for breakfast, or a spinach, orange, and vanilla protein smoothie. I eat a lot of almonds too, raw and unsalted.

First off, you're assuming they're fat because of overeating, when research shows that not to be the case. Its the foods they eat. Too much sugar, too much simple carbohydrates. Some of what you advise is true, most of it is complete bullshit. If the only way to gain fat was to eat in a surplus, then almost no one would be fat, since research has clearly shown most overweight / obese people eat no more than thin people.
