Did you miss the "end of sexism in all forms" part? I think you missed my point. I responded to the line "Women are the oppressed class". I demonstrated many ways in which women aren't the oppressed class. No, you demonstrated many ways in which men suffer because of gender roles. You didn't even attempt to argue that the world's systems of power are male-dominated and that men enjoy political and economic privilege over women on a grand scale. Saying "everything that fucks over men is actually …

No CLUE what that site was. This might help: Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy That's why women are sent to die in wars. Because men are taught to be more aggressive, dominant, and violent, and in so-doing to think of themselves and other men as dumb violent brutes? Yup. That's part of the constructs of masculinity that radical feminism indicts as inherently wrong. That's why women are encouraged to work overtime in order to support a family. Because men are taught it's their job to "bring hom…

Which "actions and advocacy" are those? Fighting FGM? Advocating abortion rights and contraceptive access? LGBTQ advocacy? Prenatal healthcare for low-income women? Writings on masculinity and how it serves the patriarchy? Eating disorder awareness? Rape prevention? Media analysis and education? Using rap and other art forms to advocate equality? What, exactly, are you talking about? (Millions of people.)

In order: Standford and Princeton both have well-known philosophy departments. Of course advocating women's rights is advocacy of sexual equality. Women are the oppressed class. And yes, opposing gender roles is inherently feminist. Not all feminists oppose gender roles, though. They are not mutually-inclusive. Maybe research radical vs. liberal feminism? It's not complicated: Equality. What the hell that means and how to get there is why there are a dozen feminisms.

"Who" defines any word? Since feminism is so broad (and can be used in conjunction with nearly every other philosophy), I should think the meaning is best-defined by reputable sources within that field. I don't think someone is espousing a philosophy just because they take up the label of someone who believes in that philosophy. Isn't that common sense? I've certainly never met or even heard of a woman or man who calls themselves feminist who doesn't meet a set of base characteristics involving …

Someone who makes up middle-schoolish insults using female body parts is an angry misogynist troll. You've several times now excused yourself from civil adult conversation Way to live up to stereotypes, man. Stay classy.

Of course not, since there is no "modern feminist movement", to speak of. Legislation passes every day which my mother and father's generation would have been in the streets protesting. Let alone the sorry state of the culture and media. My mother asked the other day what the hell my current generation is doing about the attacks on women's rights which have become a required platform of the Republican party, and I honestly didn't have an answer. My UK friends view it as a kind of barbarism, resu…

Obviously not, since there is no "modern feminist movement" to speak of. Legislation passes every day in the US which my mother's generation would have been in the streets protesting. Let alone the ravages of popular culture and media. My mom asked me the other day what the hell my generation is doing, and I honestly couldn't answer.

These people constitute less than .001% of the global population, The fact that you think this is relevant is mystifying, truly. You claimed patriarchy as a myth (again, the scientific equivalent of going full-stupid), admitted that the arbiters of reality are male, and then seem to think their proportion of the total is in question. To borrow from economics, they're called the 1% for a reason- they control EVERYTHING. Even taking a cursory glance at old myths and legends show us men and women w…

I'm a man. I'm a sociologist. You don't know anything about sociology. Or the state of the world. Yet continue to make statements about them which are Harry Potter-esque. Never conflated the sexes with economic class- only brought up Marxist Feminism when you ignorantly brought up economics. There's no such thing in sociology as "patriarchy theory". It would be understood to be much like "round Earth theory". You seem quite angry, and frankly, I don't think you're much interested in sexual equal…

I "honestly believe" those who oppose power inequality and oppression can claim any "intellectual monopoly" they so-choose- theirs is the only position which doesn't involve wholly-conjured and indefensible false distinctions among people. "Ideologies do not own ideas". Who said they do? We weren't speaking of ideologies, but of their contextual role in intellectualism. Feminists were the first people to "challenge" gender roles since to do so is by definition a type of feminism, regardless of y…

You seem to need to do a lot more research. Please tell me you don't consider patriarchy an ideological construct as opposed to sociological fact. Men own and exercise the vast majority of power on Earth. Of all kinds. Please tell me you didn't go full Flat Earth Theory with that one. Of course (a pitiful few) feminists "demonize" masculinity. Masculinity is a construct, a script serving the patriarchy into which men are indoctrinated and forced to conform, which harms their psyche at best and k…

Your laughably-defensive response had nothing at all to do with what I said. And of course ideologies opposing inequality of power get "intellectual monopoly"- don't try to pretend you're a barbarian. Now then, the question was one of definition- if you oppose gender roles (that's plural, meaning for males AND females?) as the primary engines powering the patriarchy, that's a framework within feminism.

Opposing gender roles is kinda the opposite of wanting males and females to be "more" different.

Arguably, households with boys and girls in which there are gendered divisions of labor are sexist by definition and far more likely to be Republican in the first place. And Stanford scientists aren't exactly-synonymous with "liberal feminists".

My dad was a bastard. He pumped and dumped my mom, leaving her pregnant in a time when abortion was unsafe, at best (and it's quickly becoming that way again!) My mom didn't "fine" him- she took the measly child support payments rather than nothing and still worked 3 jobs to make ends meet. I see my dad regularly now, and still think he's a bastard.

Except that sexual equality isn't "what they believe" the most common, mainstream definition of feminism is. It's what it ACTUALLY is. And they didn't say it was "wrong", they said they didn't "adhere" to it- this, in light of the gender binary, to me implies that they incorporate more inclusive definitions in addition to that one.

Somehow, I don't think a teen girl could be found on Facebook pondering shooting up kindergartens and cannibalism over butthurt which ensued from a League of Legends discussion.

This is really sad. I'd hope to see more men pursuing these types of positions. Same with white people in departments which deal with issues of racial equality.

I'm glad this issue is getting addressed. I remember walking several female friends to and from classes after dark because they were too frightened to pass "Greek row" alone. They were always loud and obnoxious places, day or night. Just general drunken and sexual debauchery. A lot of stories circulated about what happened to the women who dared inside, some more horrible than others. Back then, there wasn't as much awareness about date rape, unfortunately. "we also need to address the needs of …

Question: do you believe the patriarchy is a feminist ideology, IE, a figment of imagination? Do you believe women face no cultural, political, and economic discouragement from pursuing positions of power? Do you believe the legal and political and economic spheres are the beginning and end of class relations?

Sex-specific is not sex-exclusive. If it's an indictment of gender roles and differing societal treatment based on them, it's feminism by definition.

Men control society. In politics, entertainment, business, religion, and so forth. This is the case in the West just as everywhere else. It's a patriarchy. We own the vast majority of the wealth, make the vast majority of the decisions, and so forth. I won't get into the idea that the US military, where sexual assault is rampant, is a pillar of protection for women- since you followed it with blatant victim-blaming and refusal to acknowledge that it IS men who are responsible for the lion's shar…
