It's the same way as making make friends you don't ask them. I never asked one of my friends to be friends with me since kindergarten. You get closer to her and progress into the relationship. Be it friendship or serious love relationship.

Had a girl at home and I know she was attracted to me. After a bit of small talk I suggest: "We should definitely listen to that movie." I agree we didn't listen very carefully but I knew the movie anyways.
