I could totally be misunderstanding you, but it sounds like you’ve decided that you know what they mean (without asking for clarification or a common definition to start from), and then you try to argue them down from a position they may not actually believe. All the while, calling them the aggressor, and thinking that it’s some abuse tactic.

Ah! You’re talking about denotation vs connotation! Your Bailey is very subjective, and if that is what you’re using when you have discussions about toxic masculinity then it makes sense why people would get upset. When I hear the term ‘toxic masculinity’ my motte and bailey are the same, and that is the definition CapableRaspberry provided, and I would be so confused + angry if you tried to tell me that what I mean when I say ‘toxic masculinity’ is what you wrote as your Bailey.

So you don’t even know what Spain’s gender violence law is about, but you’re blaming it on feminism 🙄

I can see that. I spend most of my time doing in person activism which tends to weed out the extremists for both groups, primarily because I don’t think those people actually care about enacting change, just bitching online. They also lose their anonymity, there is no ‘block’ feature, and they don’t have the ability to create dog pile onto those that don’t agree with them. And social media tends to be a big circle jerk anyway.

My bad I’m just seeing this. I don’t understand how this is a motte and bailey fallacy, and that’s probably because logical fallacies confuse me. Nobody in real life says that something is a specific logical fallacy, they just refute the argument, so I’m never sure what to do with the information about the fallacy when y’all give it to me. So, sorry, but I need you to explain why the definition of toxic masculinity is a motte and bailey.

Oh, so you misunderstood the definition. Gotcha! The ‘and’ is telling you what the components of toxic masculinity are - glorification of those traits AND maladaptive or mental health, which is why I highlighted that part of the sentence. Glorifying the traits and not having maladaptive social behaviors or mental health issues isn’t toxic masculinity. What makes the concept of masculinity toxic is when it’s done in such a way that it is to the detriment of the individual. I do understand what he…

What about the definition felt vague to you? The term is toxic masculinity and it said that those things needed to be glorified in a way that lead to maladaptive social behavior and mental health issues. That seems pretty clear. This post in r/stoic fits that definition really well: “I have been into stoicism for a while and have been using it to cope with life but learning this info has made me second guess the entire philosophy. I tell them that it’s insensitive as fuck to bring up male victims of homicide as a rebuttal to women talking about women who are murdered. They’re not just a talking point you try to use to derail a conversation, and it deserves its own discussion. Also, it feels like The Oppression Olympics ™️. These discussions shouldn’t be a “who has it worse” race to the top, but a moment to bring awareness to an issue, look at the underlying causes, and think of solutions. You can’t do that in these situat…

Is the settlement judgement supposed to be impacted by the reason for the divorce? That seems like a state law issue, not a male judge issue, so activism might help fix that! I will say, when it comes to settlements, I think it’s easier for women to get so much because the family dynamics, and thus family court, is still in the 1950s. If a woman can claim that she does all the domestic labor + works you’re getting hosed in court. They’ll see her as a helpmate that supported their spouse so that …

There is no reason to have a gender gap in CEOs, surgeons, engineers, or IT. Those are intellectual pursuits that, given equal access to education, men and women are perfectly capable of doing. There also probably isn’t any reason to have a gender gap in dangerous, dirty, or low status jobs other than the pervasive idea that some things are jobs for men, lack of mechanized assistance, and the fear of harassment or assault by your coworkers. Misandry is a major reason so much of society and the governnment fails to recognize male victims of abuse, violence, rape, etc. (especially by women), how badly men are treated in the legal system and how terribly biased the education system is against boys. If you were not part of the ruling class, you were obstacles or mere cattle to those who were. Both men and women of the ruling class treated both men and women of not-the-ruling-class this way. That's classicism, which also has gender discrimination. Examples: women not having the right to inherit and own land being passed over for royal titles despite being the first born child So, outside of classism, do you think that there is no gender based oppression, silencing, or marginalization?

Some individuals exploit this dynamic, using male victims' experiences to signal strength and elevate themselves at the expense of the victimized. There was a NYT article about sexual assault in the U.S. military and the quote that will always stick with me is a man who says that his attacker told him that he specifically targeted other men because 1.) nobody would believe them, and 2.) the it elevated his power above them even more so than their difference in rank. First, WHY!? did you look that up? Second, yeah, men being sexually assaulted is very pervasive as the butt of a joke, or just a natural life experience for them. Lots of male comics made prison rape jokes when I was growing up, and I still see it in comment sections if a man is going to jail for something that people think is heinous. We would have to amend the constitution, likely outsource jobs, and those jobs that aren't outsourced would become positions for underpaid undocumented immigrants. This country is too money hungry to do any of those things, so we'll continue to have a massive prison industrial complex.

Second, any husband who did truly assault or r@pe his wife answered to the men of her family of origin and the men of the community. Often, married men who truly did force their wives into sex got a talking to, or hauled out of their homes and tuned up. See "The Godfather" for a scene circa 1955 in which Sonny kicks the shit out of his brother in law for beating up Sonny's little sister Connie. women have been oppressed, silenced, and marginalized since the ancient times, so men getting oppressed today is nothing compared to all the things women had endured in the history Are you arguing against this because you don't believe that women have historically been " oppressed, silenced, and marginalized since the ancient times" or is the issue that they're being dismissive of the current oppression that men face?

The issue is that men can't do the same thing. If men wear something tight like in OPs picture, people will treat them like a predator.
