In this scenario, Are you willing to make childcare decisions with your wile that she can afford? You may have a $20,000 private school budget but a barista is clearly going to be utilizing public schools. Same for access to subsidized health insurance, etc.

So custodial parent can also work. In the US, government subsidized schooling/ childcare is not available for all age groups or income levels nor is it available to meet all the childcare needs. Let’s say kids are public school age, School is generally in session for 8 hours but most people’s commute and work commitments are 9-10 per day leaving a childcare gap. Childcare in my area is $1500-2000 per month. Insurance for baby is $400 per month. $30k annually barely covers expenses for a newborn here.

In the US, it depends on the state if being involuntary listed on the birth certificate actually determines paternity. In some states, the father has to sign (or not sign) separate documentation to establish paternity.
