A different example: If sb says they want honesty in their relationship they do not mean "Tell me if you think I look fat in that dress", they mean "Do not lie to me with the intent to do harm to me or the relationship. Don't cheat and somewhat open up to me in a way that I can handle". So if someone says "be authentic" they just mean "don't lie about yourself".
