It's bad when somebody needs help or protection and they can't get it because of social stereotypes. It's also bad when somebody doesn't need help and has their power of decision taken away by an institution that views them as inherently needing direction and does not have their best interest at heart. If that's not your goal, it's not your goal. Don't focus on it. Don't let other people tell you what your goal is and then shame you for not going after it. Receding hairlines are masculine and sexy. (I'm a gay man and I think that at least.. I don't know if that counts :P) If you end up finding someone (or multiple people) that you want to build a life with, those people should care about your success broadly (including all the goals you mentioned) and not just the status of your relationship.
