When observing girls and boys games, researchers noticed that when a boy messed up, they were corrected and encouraged to keep going, while girls were expected to mess up and basically ignored, leading to less skill due to less training. Then there’s of course games that don’t necessarily cater to either. There’s definitely more “girl niche” games than there were in the past, I think people just have issues with mainstream games not having much of those.
