Models, currently the favorite book around these parts, says the exact same thing. You really don't have a clue what you're talking about. If you ask a girl out, and she wants to see you, she will make time for you. If she works all week, she'll offer to find time next week or after work. If she doesn't, it's because she's not that into you and doesn't really care if she sees you again at best. You can fix this by making stronger connections when you first meet.

If they aren't interested, they will tell you. This is dead wrong. Most women are non-confrontational and will go out of their way to avoid telling a man that they are not interested in them, especially one that lacks the social acumen to notice it themselves. If she's not interested in you, she will show you by not making time for you.

Just like with regular approaches, the easiest way is to make a flattering, nonsexual comment about an article of clothing she's wearing. edit: That makes much more sense in response to the barista. Not the easiest of tasks at a pool.

Paying for a date is not creepy. I bought a girl boba the other day, and everyone was pleased. What is creepy is feeling like you have to pay for your date, as if she's having to put up with you so you are obligated to compensate her with gifts. The dynamic is not a good one.

I agree with must everyone else who says she probably wasn't in the best of moods, but one thing you could do is make more statement instead of questions. Like: “You look ready for the gym". By making a statement you come across as more assertive.

Last night I offended a woman with a joking comment. "That's racist", she proclaimed as she completely withdrew and turned away. Completely unphased, asked her "Is it?", and without hesitating, moved on to other related topics. She quickly turned right back to me. By being unreactive, I showed her that I wasn't interested in playing her game and was in charge setting the mood of the conversation. tl;dr: Be unreactive.

Getting her number makes flaking less likely to happen. If she has to make the effort of starting a conversation, versus just responding to one, she'll be less likely to take that step.
