Alien is a perfect example. Ripley is juat an ordinary person and overcomes her fears and survives. Then in the sequel she is the only one who knows anything about these aliens and gets real brave to save everyone. Same with Sarah Connor. Started as some normal person thrown into a terrible situation which molded her into a badass.
