Why would you think giving a celebrity as an example is a good idea? Famous people are in the top 0.001% no matter what they look like. That doesn't apply to us.

Scott Alexander, who I can best describe as a psychiatrist obsessed with statistics, has an excellent series of posts about Dweck's theories and studies, and why they're most likely bullshit. This one and this one are the most general ones and you might want to take a look at them. The tl;dr version is that if "growth mindset" actually worked, it would probably have revolutionized the fields of social science and education ages ago. This hasn't happened and none of Dweck's ideas have been succes…

Gl out there with this new info What luck? You're just telling us how to figure out whether or not we were born ugly, and that we're fucked if the answer is yes. Hardly counts as actionable advice.

You're only getting that now? NeoreactionSafe is one of the most bizarre cranks I've ever seen on the Internet. I guess being a conspiracy theorist who thinks psychologists are secretly plotting to brainwash mankind into worshipping Satan is a "positive identity for men" though.

This is also wrong. You're not "seeding the network", you're downloading files of your choosing and uploading them back for others to do the same. There are literally only two risks associated with using BitTorrent: You get tricked into downloading a virus. Surprisingly common. Using private trackers, reading comments and/or a good AV (MBAM and the VirusTotal uploader are a good combination) will generally prevent this. Your country and ISP care about piracy, so you get hit with copyright strike…

I'm sorry, but I have to take a moment to respond to this: ... your IP is shared with the other users. What does that mean? Well, anyone could easily track your router and location and send repetitive requests, crashing your computer or your router. And malicious files can be easily sent to your computer directly, once the person knows your IP. The fact that your IP is shared means fuck-all. Your IP is shared with hundreds of entities during a 5-minute web browsing session. IPs are not an accura…

This is more like taking a horse to water just to have it kick you in the face and run away.

I don't think you get what a sunk cost is. In economics we have this concept of sunk costs, referring to costs that have already been incurred, but which cannot be recouped. (from an article on Less Wrong, backed by Wikipedia) Anything you buy and can't refund, including the Church's "services", qualifies as a sunk cost. The sunk cost fallacy refers to the human tendency to be influenced by them in an attempt to stay consistent with your past self. (As the article I've linked nicely explains.)

I doubt they'll lose any money over this.

If the story is true, I doubt it ended with a dressing-down from the actual judge. (If it did, I would expect to see that story on TRP, not the reality show take.)

It's a reality show. All staged, as far as I can tell.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
