No need to be ashamed, since that's the first step of the learning curve. As you learn more and can start to apply more technique, imitation gives way to innovation. Great musicians all started off by learning songs that others had performed or recorded before they picked up an instrument. It helps to be able to read music and have a sense of rhythm, but having a developed ear is what puts you over the top. Took the words right out of my mouth. The only thing I would add is that with addiction comes the build up of a tolerance for the addictive substance or behavior. Not only are they attempting to recapture the endorphin rush of that first episode, but their tolerance build up produces diminishing returns. Yes it is. My friends stepfather went in for knee replacement surgery two years ago at the age of 73, AND he had full blown Type II Diabetes going on. He survived the surgery but went on to have a stroke 5 weeks later and wound up needing hospice care for the last 4 months of his life. Quite the expensive outcome for "elective surgery."
