The narrator of 1984 is relaying Winston's thoughts and attitudes. The sentence preceding the one you quoted is, "He disliked nearly all women, and especially the young and pretty ones." In a different part of the novel, Winston fantasizes about raping and murdering a random woman off the street. It's poor optics IMO to quote Winston to try and support a point like this.

OOP isn't asking in good faith given the immediate dismissal of suicide statistics and assumption that men are at fault, but this is of course an actual thing. Ricardo López, famous stalker of Björk, killed himself and blamed it on her refusing to give him a shot romantically. I have a former friend who threatened to kill himself if his girlfriend broke up with him. The men are certainly much greater victims in these situations, though.

Agreed. I've been banned from and dogpiled on countless femnist/progressive subreddits/groups for saying things as milquetoast as, "we need to have empathy for men," or, "hatred against any group is unacceptance." And I'm a leftist woman myself. It's disgusting, and on their behalves I'm sorry. I hope that culture changes for the better.

Thank you, that's really sweet of you to say. Yeah, I don't blame you, I struggle to be in some feminist circles for the same reason. I can't stand the constant man-bashing. The total lack of empathy some women have for 50% of the human population is terribly sad. It's sad on both sides, but I feel like misandry is much more socially acceptable and permitted by mods in those spaces, whereas here misogyny is typically punished.

I have a bachelor's of science, and the graduate program I'm in right now is humanities. Humanities is far worse about this stuff, but in undergrad when I was taking coursework in chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, etc, behavior and attitudes like this were sadly still rampant.
