If he wanted to be honest he wouldn't talk about welfare and black people, he'd talk about welfare and white people who weren't affected by the war on drug in the same way. You need to take another sample no affected by the same factor to get an honest view and looking at other groups elsewhere in other countries with welfare who don't have such a problem with single parenthood.

I think a problem with your theory is that historically women didn't have higher life expectancy because of death in childbirth. Although I guess that doesn't change much since they probably have at least 1 kid by that point or the kid that kill them if it doesn't also die at birth but then it would still have been very likely to die without the mother. Well to be fair, the children actually helped with the work back then at a pretty young age, just needed to keep them alive until then. Cleaning was also not as deep as it is now, standard of cleanliness have risen dramatically. Men going at war was very much celebrated with tales of heroism and valor, the white feather in WW1 in the UK show that pretty well...
