I think there's a very strong explanation for why so many successful movements get taken over by extremists as time goes on. I think it's not that moderates become extremists, but because moderate members of a movement participate less or drop out entirely once their own goals are achieved. It's really hard to nail down specifics, but it seems to be around 1.8 to 2 million in jail in the US, compared to ~1 million convicted for non-violent crimes. 1	Can someone in the comments explain how this works? Universities that are private institutions are allowed to do pretty much anything they want within the confines of the law. There's at least one religious university (I think mormon?) that forbids men and women to spend time together off campus without a chaperone. While I don't think they should get involved in a case like this, they have the legal right to if they want to.
