I think a possible explanation is that unwanted children are more often treated badly than wanted children and that women who did not plan to get pregnant are often the ones who will get an unwanted child and will have to take care of that child, ergo: women will more often than men have to take care of a kid they did not want to take care of. Maybe, if men were instead the ones who would have to take care of the kid, you'd see a higher rate for men. This is of course hypothetical, but it seems …

This is true, but it's irrelevant either way. Research on the wage gap focusses on explaining wage discrepancies between women and men by looking at how much they earn in different companies. By controlling for variables such as years of experience, hours of work per week, formal qualifications, etc. you still have some unexplained difference and that's most often interpreted as discrimination.
