I think you should look at it this way. He is ashamed he can't provide for his GF or Wife. Being a good provider is essential to a man in that role. It says that his mind and heart are in the right place to want to do better and eventually provide, but money is an issue for him. The opposite is a guy that cant pay, but feels no way about it.
