Yes 'ask' means a voluntary request. But it's a common euphemism when talking about the draft. Not really worth arguing over.

I just would make a bigger point than just selective service registration, because keep in mind that no man has been drafted in 35+ years. And the military today has women serving in very dangerous roles. I believe it's likely if we faced a threat great enough to bring back the draft, women would be asked to make the same sacrifices as men.

In the USA you are innocent before proven guilty. People should and mostly do understand this is a critical aspect of our justice system. A public trial allows both defenders and accusers to come forward. The "slippery slope" towards secret-trials is dangerous and worth avoiding. I think the benefit of public trial system, both for victim and the accused, outweighs the dangers of a secret trial system.
