Try to distance associations you may have formed between any cultural/sociological construct to what the core essence is that has composed your moral perspective. I've never met my son after 9 years because the mum claimed requesting access directly from myself or via my family was tantamount to personal harassment to her. It's an upside down world we live in these days.

It's an outmoded sexist system pitted against the Dad's in one way or another. These stats are probably manipulated discounting vital information. The ones that can afford to file custody and perform all the required steps until they've reached the threshold of enough money being contributed to the system - may get custody 60% of the time. If you weren't even married then it's probably even more costly with poorer prospects.
