You could also take a lump sum amount, basically she buys you out with the peace of mind that it’s not a monthly thing. You could then put that lump sum into low cost index fund investments and eventually have your kids inherit it.

Do you see any chance of salvaging things and if so have you tried couples therapy? I know that’s not popular here but maybe you both could learn to agree and disagree and respect each other’s values. As an atheist I feel atheists of all people should be more tolerant and understanding of others and should not be breaking relationships or belittling others for their beliefs. I had a different reason for divorce but I tried therapy anyway given a child and significant assets involved. Unfortunate…

Seems like you changed and want her to change too to match your beliefs. I see her side that she wouldn’t want to become Christian all of a sudden. What if you had converted to Islam and wanted her to cover herself from head to toe every time she stepped out of the house? That would really be following traditional male/gender roles going back centuries. I am an atheist but I am not on board with the extreme LGBT+ ideology. In my opinion, the whole “gender is a social construct thing” is taking p…

I don’t understand this. If I had a relationship like that, I would never divorce. How do you do purely physical and support each other? But everyone is different, I guess. Perhaps the backstory would explain things.

Or get a pre-nup.

Try and sit down calmly with your wife and figure out if she is serious about divorce or she wants to work on the marriage. If she wants to work on the marriage try marriage counseling. This would be the cheapest option and maybe the love can come back. If she wants a divorce then try to figure out if you can keep it amicable. If so, go with a mediator or a collaborative lawyer. This is the next cheapest approach. More than 95% of marriages settle out of the court. If you want to go to war and f…

That’s very good advice. I have bruised my knuckles twice this year punching walls and desks. Not worth the pain that follows for weeks. Next time I am punching into the air until I get tired.

Thinking of it a little differently - if you were in a happy marriage the financial stuff was 50-50 anyway. It just gets split in divorce in a more tangible way. Instead of continuing in an unhappy marriage at least you remove yourself from a toxic environment and find some peace. There are going to be big mental health benefits of not continuing in an unhappy situation.

The power Americans have given to this one politician is ridiculous. People are ending life long friendships, family relationships, marriages over a political celebrity. It may be bad for him to be in power but it’s a self-inflicted wound to let that impact your personal life. How we react to things and let them impact our lives is entirely on us.

If you are not ready to file but you are uncomfortable with how the money is being spent, maybe suggest to move half of yours to a separate bank account. Or suggest getting a post-nuptial agreement. These may open new issues and talk of divorce may increase. But perhaps better than doing nothing.

If there is a 2nd marriage in my future, which is highly doubtful, I am getting a prenup. Just cannot take a second hit at my age. And this applies even if my future partner has more money than me. As someone who has always been independent, paid every bill on time and provided for others, I would find it debasing to take what I haven’t earned. But I don’t judge others who think otherwise. Everyone is different.

You didn’t say how old you are but you sound young. You will have plenty of time to build back. I am just starting on my divorce process. In my case it’s a long term marriage and I am the one asking for divorce because I want to live in peace and end the years of toxicity. Yes it will be expensive, I will have to give up many things, etc. But I will be ok in the end and I have the rest of my life to build back and live with less stress. I think of it as everything was for two of us anyway. We ar…

Condos and small townhouses appreciate the least over time. I bought one 20 years ago and it has basically kept up with inflation and I live in a very HCOL area. It’s better to invest in a low cost total market index fund, get the cheapest but a nice apartment for rent and just live there for many years while cutting living costs wherever possible. With an apartment for rent you have the advantage of mobility when you don’t want to live in the area anymore.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
