In all seriousness though the obsession with looks is a direct consequence of the ubiquity of visual media and the invention of ‘dating’ (people look for the most attractive person they can get by collective standards, rather than being satisfied with the presence of attraction). Attractiveness should be seen as a binary as it has no more utility the further up the scale you go. I think the simplest and most immediate response should be to model yourself as someone others will desire to emulate, and then reject everything that doesn't conform with your principles, whether it benefits you or not. So yes, we are responsible for giving them too much power over ourselves and being poor stewards over that which is our dominion.
