What if they had a phase of seeking out lots of casual sex and increasing their n-count but then had enough of that and now sincerely want to settle down?

Emotions are physical though, they are neurological processes. Sex dumps oxytocin and prolactin into your brain whether you want it to or not, and the effect of those neurotransmitters is to produce a feeling of bonding and closeness with whoever’s around you. The intellect is what comes into play when people choose not to respond to those feelings of bonding.

On the other hand, this gives us the freedom of not being accountable to anyone. We both know the downsides of that, but nobody’s going to be throwing a hysterical bitch fit if we decide we want to go on a random road trip or trade in the car or take up an expensive new hobby. Every life has its tradeoffs.

It’s knowing that every relationship in your life is surface-level and that no-one will mourn your death. Hard truth. There are maybe a dozen people on the planet that would even notice if I died, and most of them would get over it within a couple of weeks.
