The problem with the annual Department of Agriculture report is that it is discussing the average total cost and not the marginal cost of having a kid. Do you already have a car that can fit a car seat? Do you have any type of housing where a kid can live, even if not have it's own bedroom? Then huge chucks of that $245k don't apply to you. Look at the marginal cost when making any decision.

Not for what I'm talking about, and it also doesn't matter if you're married or not for Social Security: if your child is under 18 and you die, the child's guardian (i.e. the mother) gets monthly payments.

Remember, if you've worked in your life... and are the father to an underage child... if you die, the government pays out your Social Security to the mother until the child turns 18. I've seen firsthand how someone is worth more $ dead than alive.

As soon as I watched that scene, I knew this post was deservedly coming. That's not all though! Another major plot point is that Scott Lang is "disposable." The female love interest, no matter how empowered, isn't - but the male protagonist is disposable.

I think there's a "U" shaped response: Pure "red pill" results in high fertility rates (traditional religions, the high fertility rate countries you mentioned). A little bit of blue pill results in very low fertility rates (Japan, Italy, Singapore, Hong Kong). A lot of blue pill results in moderately higher fertility rates than the "very low" category (France, Scandinavian countries). the ratio of taxes / benefits is not equal This seems a dubious standard, since they are never equal. Some people give, some people take. men & women are not in equal standing biologically. This sounds reasonable to me. Would there be another way of achieving the same goals (decreasing the tax burden for parents, because parents are contributing the future tax base) without running afoul of this issue?
