Selective feminism is definitely a ridiculous notion! One of my pet peeves.

Hmm, I didn't realize patriarchy was such a debated topic. As an amateur historian (and not just as a feminist), I came to the patriarchy conclusion just from studying various societies throughout history. I mean, it's generally accepted historical fact that women were, for a very long time, viewed as property and could be bought or sold. I suppose we could argue whether or not patriarchy still exists in our culture and whether or not it's still a problem. But that's not what I'm interested in n…

Anyone who mistakes my kindness for weakness and tries to take advantage of that lives to regret it :P

I am here to listen and learn, not to argue. If you'd like to have a discussion about patriarchy, we can do so elsewhere.

maybe they do and maybe they don't. I was hoping to learn from this group, however, and I believe I have. Though some have been disrespectful, many have shared valid concerns. I'm just listening to a different point of view. I don't think that puts my dignity at stake.

Been researching some of the topics that have been brought up. I'll do writing on some of them in the future! Thanks!

I guess that depends on who you are. To a gay or trans person, such a grievance might be contributing to some of these bigger problems. I'm definitely hoping the stigma of "men= abusers, women=victims" goes away, and that men are able to find more support when they need to escape abusive relationships. It's wrong of society to assume that men cannot be victims in relationships (not to mention that this thinking completely ignores same-sex relationships)

I agree that a matriarchy would be equally harmful to society. I just don't believe that we have one, or are anywhere close to having one in this society. I wanted to put it aside because we don't seem to agree on the meaning and implications of patriarchy. I opt then that we put it aside for this discussion.

Let's put the patriarchy discussion aside for now. I won't try to convince you to be a feminist and you're not going to succeed in convincing me to NOT be a feminist. But I think that we are both fighting for a better world and need to listen to the different perspectives of one another in order to achieve it.

These are definitely problems. However, just because male suicide is a problem does not mean that the low percentage of female ceos is not also a problem or a reflection of a much deeper problem. Though, just because we feminists can not focus on all issues in the world at once and choose to focus on women's issues does not mean that we don't want a better world for everyone! So if you have any ways in which we can be more respectful to male issues as we fight for women's issues, please share!

We're certainly listening to your criticism, and I will not respond to it since this is an MRA site and I am a visitor here and want to be respectful. However, feminists are justified for responding to criticism that we deem unfair, just as you are justified in responding to criticism of your movement.

Also, I think I agree with you on affirmative action. I have mixed feelings, and I think it's done good, but I'm kind of offended by the implication that I need special help from the government to get a job. I'd like to get jobs based on my own qualifications--I can handle it. I'm a big girl. :P

Yes, there are female privileges. For instance, I can dress "like a man" without getting attacked for that, but men who dress "like a woman" will likely receive backlash. Good thoughts!

I have read your sidebar information and found it helpful. Thank you. However, I'm not sure that telling a woman to "silently accept all the criticism" you throw at us and to "shut up and take it" is the best way to pursue equality.

My men is crisis blog post was not an attack on the MRAs. I still believe my frustration toward those who blame women's equality for the so-called "downfall of men" was justified--I don't believe that you MRAs are responsible for this thinking. however, I will preface my "men in crisis" post with a clarification and apology for not being more clear in my intent.

Fair enough. Just seemed like this would be a good place to gather some of these opinions. I will not attempt to convert you to feminism--I will just thank you for your willingness to have this discussion! :)

Indeed, both sides need to stop invalidating the other side's position because the other side speaks in frustration or anger. Frustration and anger is certainly a natural, and justified response to inequality.

Thanks for your response! I agree with you on most of these for sure (though, my experience tells me that feminism and patriarchy are still relevant topics. I do sincerely hope that our conversations about them can start to be formed in ways that are less reactionary, though!)

I'm sorry you saw this post as an attempt to ridicule men's movements. Perhaps it was poorly written. However, I did not knock any men's movements--I believe misogyny and misandry are closely related and both need to be eradicated (if you read my blog more often you'd see that I write against both). I was simply attempting to point out that inequality toward women still exists. The idea that equality is a zero-sum game and that in order for women to achieve, men must suffer is false. I get frust…
