Shared legal custody means the “non-primary” parent has legal rights to get information from the school, see medical records, provide input into decisions, etc. However when a dispute arises over those issues the courts usually defer to the primary parent. These results are generally only possible when people have a lot of resources (financial and emotional.) When mom gets maternity leave and dad goes to work, mom becomes the primary caregiver. Family courts rely heavily on status quo and changing the status quo is expensive. | 1 | 50/50 custodyI have 50-50 custody with my son’s father. No money changes hands. No lawyers were ever involved. This is how it should be. The things I read on other forums boggle my mind.
