This is tough, good luck. I honestly don't know how to find a good lawyer but I can tell you from my experiences what to avoid. I'm on lawyer #3 & learned important lessons with each of my mistakes. Lawyer 1- I had to get right away as the ex was pulling some shenanigans (fake assault accusation to try to get complete control of kids). I called the lawyer my friend is using, then found out she is pretty much hated by lawyers & judges, she flat out refuses to negotiate with the other side, & she …

They'll tell you what you want to hear to get your $. I don't know how to get around this, just know that the 3 lawyers I've been through have all done the same thing. They tell me what they're going to do & how they're going to do it to reach my goal of getting the separation done & over with, then they stray from the plan & do their own thing & talk to the opposing lawyer to drag it out. I feel like they're all in cahoots, they all know that if they get shit done quickly & efficiently they qui…

I can relate. After our judge had us swap bank records, I discovered she had opened a secret personal account while we were together. I made a spreadsheet showing how much she siphoned from our joint account & into her secret personal account & it made me sick. $76k in the last 19 months of our relationship was stolen & wasted. I should have never trusted her to handle our finances while I picked up all the extra work I could find to try to keep up with her spending. Lesson learned. I'll be pres…

I was using the same excuse to stay in my toxic relationship, thinking it was better for our 4 kids to grow up with their parents together in the same household. Eventually I got to the point where I realized I didn't want my kids growing up seeing this dysfunctional relationship and thinking that it is normal or okay. I don't want my daughters thinking it's okay to treat a man the way I was being treated, and don't want my boys thinking a man should put up with a woman treating them the way the…

Lots of great ideas in here. So far I'm enjoying golfing, fishing, & bowling in my free time without kids, & camping when I have them.. I'd like to get more into trap/target shooting, jiu-jitsu, & working out. I've also gotten more involved in coaching my kids sports teams which they love.

I'd like to make my whole house look like a man cave now that she's gone. There's a bunch of good Facebook groups for mancave decorating ideas.

Reading through these success stories and also seeing other readers get a glimpse of hope is amazing! This is the best post I've read on here since starting my separation journey 9 months ago. We need more posts like this as we work through the men's slaughter house known as family court.

I'm 8 months into our split. Shortly after I initiated our split, my ex told me she was having sex with my best friend several years ago & he was trying to convince her to leave me & move in with her. They kept it their own dirty little secret for 10 years and we remained best friends until we split and she spilled the beans in spite. Then I connected the dots between the arsenic poisoning I suffered from right around 10 years ago & the affair with my best friend in the same timeframe. I havent …

I'm going through this now trying to buy my ex out of the house. My lawyer explained we will give a cashier's check to the title company, then the title company gives it to the ex when she comes into their office & signs the paperwork. That way she gets the $ right when she signs the quit claim paperwork.

I'm with you. I have more time & peace, but still wasting $ on lawyers as she hides $ & lies about income to try to get more child support out of me. I see the light at the end of the tunnel, I see how much I could potentially save, but we're not there yet.

I thought men were exaggerating with some of the horror stories I heard, but I found out that's reality. My ex immediately became a monster I didn't know she was capable of becoming. You have no idea how she may react after being told she's not wanted. I thought I kinda knew what to expect but wow. She was immediately trying to steal & hide money, immediately got on Facebook dating app and got knocked up by the first guy she met before moving out of our house, moved into a house with this guy & …

I'm currently going through a separation without marriage in Illinois. We have been together 12 years & have 4 kids together. No alimony, but she's going after child support even though we have a 50/50 parenting plan in place. I had to get 2 lawyers, my divorce lawyer only works in family court which deals with parenting plan & child support, so I had to hire a separate lawyer to deal with separation of assets (house, vehicles, camper) which is outside of family court because we're not married. …

Transactions the past few months have decreased to less than half of what they were the first few months. She's no longer making frequent deposits of large sums of cash into the account then spending it through debit card transactions anymore like she did at the beginning. Her mom is giving her the cash tips she makes every day after waitressing, her dad is no longer writing checks through his business for her but I've seen him hand her cash on 2 occasions the past couple months, she's babysitti…

Wow, very similar situation. My ex also lives for almost free, her dad is paying her legal expenses, she's managing one of her dad's businesses where she's in charge of making the schedule but only scheduling herself for around 6-10 hours per week, & babysitting 3 kids in her home for cash & not reporting it.

I'm in the same boat, my ex claims she makes $20k/yr but her rent is $1600/mo which is $19,200/yr. Obviously things dont add up. My lawyer subpoenaed her bank statements which show her spending $12,000-$15,000 monthly for the first several months we were separated, then she got smart & started dealing with cash instead of banking. I know her mother is paying almost all of her bills & giving her around $4,000 monthly & she has several other family members, friends, & new boyfriend giving her cash…

Get everything in order for yourself first. Make sure you have a stash of cash, find the best lawyer around, secure all personal possessions you don't want to disappear, etc. before ever mentioning that d word to her. She will turn into a monster you didn't know she was capable of becoming as soon as you tell her she is not wanted, prepare as much as possible before proceeding.

Like others said, take everything out of the house u don't want to disappear, then negotiate everything & prepare for frustration. You will be dealing with a different beast that you didn't know she was capable of being as soon as you tell her shes not wanted. Many action, decisions, negotiations will be emotionally driven including some calculated, vindictive, spiteful efforts on her part after being told she is not wanted, expect this for months. My lawyer said the easiest way to separate asse…

Sounds like you have this pretty well thought through, all of my suggestions were addressed as I continued reading. A quote that sticks with me as I work through my mess of a divorce is "the woman you divorce isn't the woman you married." This is so true, and I have much of the same feelings you're having now, as I'm sure many of us do. I had no idea she had this level of crazy in her, I had never seen it or even signs of it. I was totally blindsided by the person she turned into when I said I w…

3 main reasons: Hypergamy- women naturally look to marry up & trade up when the opportunity presents itself. Financially beneficial- not always, but usually it is beneficial for the woman to divorce. Marriage is such a lopsided contract in favor of the woman & detrimental to the man. It's the only contract ever signed in which one party benefits from breaching the contract after signing. If a contract like this was presented in a business setting it would be ridiculed & never even considered. Di…
