You're wrong, that is how it works. It's not always a 50/50 split, though. If one parent provided 80% of the material means (income, etc.) then they will likely have to pay a higher portion of the supported owed collectively by the parents to maintain the childs current living situation.

I'm getting very little because I make a sizeable amount of money, and my ex wife works at a restaurant as a waitress part time. It's based on how much each party earns, not the gender of the parent. How it works in my state; Custodial parent earns $50,000, non-custodial makes $40,000. Total earning potential is $90,000. That unfortunately happens. Some parents use child support as a weapon, or as a personal slush fund while neglecting their kids. But it's not all custodial parents who do that. If the non custodial parent sees these things, they should petition for custody. You don't need a lawyer, you need dedication to your kids and the willingness to be a parent who provides, whether you're getting/paying child support.

It's a matter of choice. I chose to fight for my kids in court, and the court determined I had the best interest of the kids in mind. Why, when I provide virtually everything that my kids need, should my ex wife not have to contribute? And I'm not getting some huge amount. It's 300/month. That's $75/week.

To agree with the other person, it's most definitely not like you see on TV. Her lawyer tried to spin my daughters "connection" with her mother, how it would emotionally traumatize the mother, how she couldn't live without the baby she helped raise... All of the same things I did and still happily do. She even coached her to cry, to play the victim, etc. It's a lot of theatrics in family court.

I was awarded custody of my (then) 9 year old daughter last year. Her mother tried the same routine. Damn near worked on the judge. My lawyer used the exact same argument, almost word for word when I was on the stand. It was a good day.

I'm in the US, and have custody of my daughter. It's amazing the entitled view that women have about the court system.
